The Mount Prospect Historical Society will be continuing monthly needlecraft nights under a new name — Bessie’s Workbasket.
Join us the second Wednesday of each month in Central School (103 S. Maple St., Mount Prospect) from 7:00 to 9:00 pm. We will no longer offer a 10:00 a.m. class option in 2025.
In January, come try your hand at redwork. Redwork is an American form of embroidery developed in the 19th century. It was very popular from about 1880-1920. The name “redwork” originates from the use of Turkey red thread, a special dye extracted from the roots of the madder plant, native to Asia and Europe. As redwork embroidery became increasingly popular, women started using this charming technique to embellish items like pillowcases, tablecloths, dishtowels, quilt blocks, and dresser scarves. Bring your own object or practice on our blank fabric.
In February, upcycle some clothing with embroidery designs. Upcycle an item in your wardrobe. Bring in a shirt, jeans, jacket or bag. We will embroider the edges or create a design on your item. We will supply some patterns, floss and needles.
Upcoming class topics will be posted throughout the year so be sure to check back regularly for updated information.
